Secret Mission in Central Park: Capturing Samuel & Bethany’s Surprise Proposal at Bethesda Terrace

Most of the time, my job is about planning. We discuss locations, mood boards, and outfits. But every now and then, I get a call that requires me to trade my photographer hat for that of a secret agent.

That’s exactly what happened when Samuel Hudson called me from the UK.

His mission? He was traveling to New York City with his girlfriend, Bethany Condon, and he planned to ask the biggest question of his life. He wanted me there to capture the exact moment she said "Yes." The twist? This was my very first surprise proposal photoshoot.

The Stealth Setup at Bethesda Terrace Usually, I meet couples who are already prepared for the camera. This time, I had to blend in with the thousands of tourists at Central Park. Samuel and I had coordinated everything via a series of covert texts. The location was set: the majestic Bethesda Terrace, overlooking the fountain and the lake.

I arrived early to scout the perfect angle, keeping my camera gear hidden as much as possible. I was nervous—not about the shots, but about the timing. In a programmed session, you can do retakes. In a surprise proposal, you get one chance to capture that raw, once-in-a-lifetime reaction.

The Moment of Truth When I saw Samuel and Bethany walk down the steps of the Terrace, my adrenaline spiked. He gave me the pre-arranged signal. I positioned myself, and as he dropped to one knee, I started shuttering.

The result was pure, unscripted magic. The look of total surprise on Bethany’s face, the tears, the laughter, and the backdrop of Central Park’s most iconic architecture... it was everything.

From UK to NYC: A New York Beginning After the initial shock wore off, we spent the rest of the hour exploring Central Park for some editorial-style engagement portraits. Moving from the stealth mode of the proposal to the joy of an engagement session was an incredible creative reset.

This session reminded me why I love being a NYC wedding and engagement photographer. It’s not just about the final image; it’s about the privilege of being the only witness to a moment that changes two lives forever.

Samuel and Bethany, thank you for trusting me with your secret mission. Welcome to the Felipe Tobar family.
